Social Action

Delta Sigma Theta’s National Social Action Commission was established in 1963 to answer the need for increased awareness of policy and legislation affecting Black women and children. This commission works to provide Sorors with political, educational, economic, and other related details which impact our communities. The OCAC Social Action Commission is directly correlated with the national objectives as outlined. The Commission regularly spearheads social events like voter education, activation and registration, donations to environmentally sensitive organizations, volunteerism at local elementary schools, redevelopment projects at local parks, and clothing donations for those in need. Because social action is so integral to our Sorority, we fervently dedicate ourselves to maintaining a presence and actively seeking our opportunities to better the communities in which we live and work.

Social Action: September/October School Supply Donations

Our first Social Action Project for the 2011-2012 year was collecting school supplies to donate to Jefferson Elementary School students in Santa Ana, CA.

Social Action: November/December Purse Donations to YWCA

Joanie’s Purses Charity w/YWCA

“Joanie’s Purses” is an outreach program of the YWCA Central Orange County which provides purses filled with personal care items, snacks and small gifts to women in Orange County shelters and transitional housing programs. Members of OCAC are collecting and donating purses and personal care items to donate to the program during the months of November & December.

Delta Days at the UN

Delta Sigma Theta was granted Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status by the United Nations in March 2003. The Sorority participates annually in consortiums wherein the Sorority and the UN exchange mutually educational information regarding international concerns. Delta’s ongoing consultative appointment with the United Nations is vital to the Sorority’s efforts in improving conditions of women and children in need worldwide. The OCAC participates in this event annually.

Delta Days at the Nation's Capital

In 1989, the National Social Action Commission instituted Delta Days in the Nation's Capital, an annual legislative conference to increase members' involvement in the national public policy-making process. The annual conference includes legislative briefings, issue forums, and advocacy skills development. Featured speakers include key policy makers, members of the United States Congress, Congressional staff members, and national issues experts. The OCAC participates in this event on a regular basis.
