SPIRIT OF GIVING/ OCAC

On Friday, December 2nd, 2011, elementary schools across Orange County will have the opportunity to participate in OneOC’s Spirit of Giving. Now in its 8th year, the Spirit of Giving program brings learning to life for students in low-income areas by providing them with books for their classrooms and home libraries. After students receive their books, volunteers arrive to read stories and lead discussions about giving, and reinforce the message that giving doesn’t necessarily involve spending money. Students then put their learning into action by volunteering their services at school or in their community, or by performing an act of kindness in their home. Spirit of Giving is designed to empower at-risk students to improve literacy skills while teaching them how they can make a difference in their families, schools and communities, regardless of
their personal financial circumstances. Volunteer readers spend 1 – 1 ½ hours in the classroom reading stories.
